{"id":1616,"date":"2025-04-11T11:13:17","date_gmt":"2025-04-11T11:13:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/?post_type=spl_knowledgebase&#038;p=1616"},"modified":"2025-06-10T06:58:27","modified_gmt":"2025-06-10T06:58:27","slug":"sl100-operating-temperature-ratings","status":"publish","type":"spl_knowledgebase","link":"https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/knowledgebase\/product-documentation\/product-documentation-controllers\/sl100-product-documentation\/sl100-operating-temperature-ratings\/","title":{"rendered":"SL100: Operating temperature ratings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The maximum allowable operating temperature of the board is governed by several factors.To determine the highest permissible operating temperature you need to evaluate each factor separately and then use the&nbsp;<em>worst<\/em>&nbsp;(lowest temperature) answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The factors that must be taken into account are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The semiconductors on the board have a maximum ambient temperature rating of 70\u00b0C.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The 5V power supply regulator will shut down and self-protect if its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/knowledgebase\/glossary-of-terms\/#o608\">junction temperature<\/a>&nbsp;exceeds 150\u00b0C. How hot it actually gets depends heavily on the supply voltage. The table below will help you with this factor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The chip driving the outputs will also self-heat, and eventually fail if run too hot for too long. Evaluating this factor is discussed under&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/knowledgebase\/product-documentation\/product-documentation-controllers\/sl100-product-documentation\/sl100-external-inputs-and-outputs\/sl100-external-digital-outputs\/\">SL100 External digital outputs<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hot components fail faster than cool components. For semiconductors, lowering the temperature by 10\u00b0C doubles the life time.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5V regulator<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>The worst case load on the LM317 regulator is 55mA. With a maximum permissible operating junction temperature of 125\u00b0C and a junction to ambient thermal resistance of 50\u00b0C\/W, this translates into the following maximum ambient temperatures versus supply voltage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Supply V<\/td><td>Temperature<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>up to 25V<\/td><td>70\u00b0C<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>28V<\/td><td>60\u00b0C<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>32V<\/td><td>50\u00b0C<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td>Note: Figures at 28V and 32V are given for reference only. We do not recommend operating the board at voltages over 24V for sustained periods of time.
