You have to decide which interface you are using, select it via a jumper and then connect to the corresponding external terminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Xwire is our proprietary serial peripheral bus. It consists of the Xwire electrical interface and the Xwire data protocol (language) that is used to convey data across the interface and wiring. The Xwire electrical interface is good for a few feet and up to 10 boards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RS485 is an industry standard electrical interface suitable for direct wire connection between devices located up to hundreds of feet apart. RS485 does not specify a protocol. When you use RS485 with this board it will use either the Xwire protocol with up to 32 boards, or the serial logging protocol, depending on the setting of jumper J1. The programming is the exact same but you will be able to go further for the cost of an extra RS485\/Xwire converter on the controller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Selecting the Xwire or RS485 interface<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"715\" src=\"https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sx10508_jumpers_big-1024x715.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1966\" srcset=\"https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sx10508_jumpers_big-1024x715.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sx10508_jumpers_big-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sx10508_jumpers_big-768x536.jpg 768w, https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sx10508_jumpers_big-600x419.jpg 600w, https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sx10508_jumpers_big-64x45.jpg 64w, https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sx10508_jumpers_big.jpg 1064w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two jumpers on the board labelled &#8216;J0&#8217; and &#8216;J1&#8217;.<br>If &#8216;J1&#8217; is connected,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/knowledgebase\/product-documentation\/product-documentation-xwire-peripherals\/sx10508-xwire-sd-logger\/sx10508-xwire-logging\/\">Xwire<\/a>\u00a0is enabled. Otherwise,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/knowledgebase\/product-documentation\/product-documentation-xwire-peripherals\/sx10508-xwire-sd-logger\/sx10508-xwire-logging\/\">Xwire<\/a>\u00a0is disabled and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/knowledgebase\/product-documentation\/product-documentation-xwire-peripherals\/sx10508-xwire-sd-logger\/sx10508-serial-logging\/\">serial logging<\/a>\u00a0operates over RS485 instead of COM1.<br>If &#8216;J0&#8217; is connected (and &#8216;J1&#8217; is also connected), Xwire operates over the standard TTL Xwire connection. Otherwise, Xwire operates over RS485.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Connecting to the Xwire interface<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"266\" height=\"186\" src=\"https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sx10508_rs485.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1967\" srcset=\"https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sx10508_rs485.jpg 266w, https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/sx10508_rs485-64x45.jpg 64w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Two connectors on one long side of the board are labelled Xwire. These are the Xwire electrical connections. The two connectors are wired in parallel on the board to facilitate daisy-chaining, and are completely interchangeable. The left-hand pin of each connector is ground (0V). If you are wiring to other boards with X1\/X2 connectors, simply wire like pins together. The A and B terminals should go to A and B on all other devices on the RS485 system. The G terminal should go to system ground. Just next to the terminals (to theright above) is a jumper marked &#8220;485Term&#8221;. Installing a jumper in that position provides an RS485 line terminator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Xwire operates at 38.4KB, which is slow for RS485, hence it is very reliable.
