Here&#8217;s how it works:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Serial ports are addressed in the range 251 to 255. These are addresses in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/knowledgebase\/glossary-of-terms\/#o414\">RAM<\/a>\u00a0address space that do not actually have RAM &#8220;behind them&#8221;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The &#8220;default&#8221; port is the controller&#8217;s programming port. It sits at address 251.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a whole collection of instructions for manipulating the default port at 251. A typical one of these is\u00a0<code><a href=\"https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/knowledgebase\/programming-reference\/instructions-arranged-by-function\/communications-instructions\/default-serial-port\/comrx_fgetnum-fw-d26\/\">ComRx_fGetNum<\/a><\/code>, which retrieves a floating point number from the serial input buffer. Historically these are the original instructions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a second set of instructions for accessing any other serial ports that may exist in a given controller. These all start with an &#8216;a&#8217;, for example\u00a0<code><a href=\"https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/knowledgebase\/programming-reference\/instructions-arranged-by-function\/communications-instructions\/any-serial-port\/acomrx_fgetnum-ppfw-d29\/\">aComRx_fGetNum<\/a><\/code>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most of the\u00a0<code>ComRx...<\/code>\u00a0and\u00a0<code>aComRx...<\/code>\u00a0instructions are about\u00a0<em>receiving<\/em>\u00a0serial data. The ones for transmitting data are those like\u00a0<code><a href=\"https:\/\/webprojects.cloud\/wordpress\/splatco\/knowledgebase\/programming-reference\/instructions-arranged-by-function\/communications-instructions\/iifprintwfw-destfp-d23\/\">iifPrintWFW<\/a><\/code>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When using Hash commands<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>When using hash commands that reference serial ports (including a USB port that is mapped as a serial port, as on the EC1), it becomes much simpler.
